Slag glass is the term that's used by collectors to describe pressed glass that is opaque and has colored streaks through it. Slag glass dates back to the 1800s but the term slag is a more recent term based on the theory that these streaks of color were a result of iron smelting works to the glass. Back in the 1800s they were called brown malachite, marble glass, or even brown marble vitro porcelain.

The streaks are commonly found in purple. White and cream are also common. Blue, brown, and green although around are far less common. During the 1880s through to the 1890s Sowerby, Davidson, and Greener all manufactured slag glass. Its popularity then waned but today you are seeing a few manufacturers like Boyd Glass once again begin to produce it.
