From 1860 to 1870 he was a very successful painter and then in 1880 he turned to interior design his true passion which he pursued until his death. His passion was to see decorative arts gain the same status as fine art and his Tiffany lamps did a great deal towards the cause.

Tiffany stained glass lamps were born on a whim when Louis decided to arrange bits of colored glass left into a lamp shade that was a miniature version of his stained glass windows. It was so new and so unique it become an instant hit.

But over the life of his career designing he was never content with what he had designed. He was always striving to find new techniques, to create bolder colors, broader ranges of textures, and different sheens. He patented may techniques throughout his career.

Tiffany continuously worked with craftsmen to manufacture Tiffany shades, bases, and other Tiffany products. Lamp bases were often made of bronze and the work of fine sculptors. Stained glass shades were the result of fitting hundreds of pieces of glass together by hand inside copper foil which were light and strong. Hanging Tiffany lamps could be made very large because of the strength of the copper. Every Tiffany lamp was given a model number.

The Tiffany lamps were beautiful and extraordinary resulting in their continuous popularity but during the 1930s and 1940s their popularity did dye of some because they were considered too ornate for the new Expressionism standards....
