The lamp shade needs to be as wide as the widest part of the lamp and for many lamps wider looks much better. The bottom of the socket should always be covered.

The style of the lamp should be appropriate to the style of the dcor. A formal room with a funky retro lamp may not work but a formal room with an elegant steel gray or teal ceramic lamp will look fabulous. Of course you can always dare to be different and make a real statement by contrasting styles.

Table lamps are great for task lighting and accent lighting and they are portable enough you can easily move them around. You need to consider the overall height when buying your lamp as well as the type of bulbs, bulb size, and shade type.

If a lamp uses a maximum 60W bulb you might find the lamp is great for accent lighting but not so good for task lighting, but a lamp that will use a 150 watt bulb would be perfect for both although perhaps a little overbearing for accenting. Try to choose the right balance.

Always use the bulbs that are recommended by the manufacturer. Using a bulb that is too large or not the correct type can cause fire hazard. Three way bulb are an excellent example. If your lamp requires a triple than that's the only type of bulb you should use.
